The Kirkonkari Nature Trail starts near the Kirkkosalmi birdwatching tower and follows boardwalks for approximately 500 metres through the reed beds to an observation shelter. Kirkkosalmi is also an excellent place for birdwatching. The lower platform of the birdwatching tower is accessible and can be reached via an accessible walkway approximately 80 metres long and 1.2 metres wide.
Keskiniemi Pooki and the Northern Shore
There is no official hiking trail to the site
Keskiniemi Pooki is Hailuoto’s oldest surviving daymark, built in 1858.
Visitors heading to the northern shore should plan their trip carefully. Distances are long, roads may be in poor condition and signage is limited. The site cannot be reached by car. Check your route in advance and be aware of restrictions applying to nature reserves and Natura 2000 areas.

Good to Know Before Your Hike
-
Bring your own firewood to campfire sites. Firewood is not provided at Hailuoto’s rest huts or campfire sites.
-
Stay on marked trails and existing tracks. Hailuoto’s heathlands and lichen-covered areas are highly sensitive to wear. When mountain biking, stay on existing tracks, and where boardwalks are provided, remain on the boardwalks.
-
Keep motor vehicles off hiking trails. Cars, ATVs and other motor vehicles should not be driven on hiking trails or off-road without the appropriate permission.
-
Respect residents’ privacy. Keep away from private yards and residential areas, and be considerate of the island’s permanent residents and holiday-home owners.
-
Check the rules for protected areas. A large proportion of Hailuoto’s hiking areas are located within Natura 2000 sites, and the island has several nature reserves.
-
Conditions change in winter. Hiking trails and campfire sites are not maintained during the winter season.
