Cycling
In Hailuoto, freedom is born on two wheels
Hailuoto Island is just a short journey from Oulu and easily reached by ferry. The island’s village roads, coastlines and forest paths offer constantly changing scenery and peaceful spots where it’s worth stopping to enjoy the moment. Cyclists are well catered for, and the island’s cafés, restaurants and sights turn a day trip or weekend escape into a memorable experience. In Hailuoto, cycling is more than a journey – it is a feeling of freedom.

Cycling to Hailuoto
Ferry
Bicycles can board the ferry without queuing, but please wait until all motor vehicles have driven on board. When disembarking, allow motor vehicles to exit first. The ferry is free of charge and reservations are not possible. Both ferries offer sheltered outdoor areas and indoor passenger lounges.
Cycling on the Road
The main road on the island is narrow, so cyclists should ride in single file rather than side by side. A dedicated cycle path starts near Ailasto and ends shortly after the village centre. Some sections of the road are in poor condition, especially in the village area near Sale Hailuoto.
Distances & Break Stops
The distance from Oulu city centre to the ferry terminal is approximately 25 km. Hailuoto is the largest island in the Bothnian Bay, measuring about 30 km from one end to the other. Along the route, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, services and rest breaks.
Respect the Island’s Fragile Nature
Hailuoto is home to many fragile natural environments, such as lichen-covered forests. Please respect the sensitive nature by staying on marked routes and well-established paths. Respect the privacy of local residents and cottage owners, and avoid entering private yards and properties.
Use only designated fire places when making an open fire. During a forest fire warning, fires are allowed only in chimney-equipped fireplaces, which can be found at the Petsamo rest hut and at the shelter near the Kirkkosalmi birdwatching tower. Overnight stays in rest huts are not permitted for fire safety reasons.
